What is a solar panel?

01 How a photovoltaic panel works

A photovoltaic panel is comprised of a group of solar cells (photovoltaic cells) that are electrically connected to one another in a series and parallel until obtaining the appropriate voltage for use. The photovoltaic modules emit as much direct radiation as it diffuses, allowing it to generate electrical energy even on cloudy days.

Photovoltaic cells are devices made of light sensitive metals that release electrons when photons collide with electrons. This collision converts light energy into electric energy. A combination of various cells form a panel or photovoltaic module.

Depending on the arrangement of the silicon atoms, there are different photovoltaic cells:

·  Crystallines:

Polycrystallines: these are formed by small crystallized particles.
Monocrystallines: these are composed of sections of a single silicon crystal (recognizable by its circular or octagonal shape where the four short sides, if visible, are noticeable that they are curves, due to the fact that it is an uneven circular cell.
·  Amorphous: when the silicon has not crystallized.

There are a series of elements surround the solar cells and whose purpose is to protect them from the external agents while providing them with the rigidness necessary so that they can attach themselves to the structures that support them. These are the following elements:

Photovoltaic module

· Encapsulating: made up of material that easily transmits radiation and not easily degraded by sunlight.
· Tempered glass exterior roof: facilitates light transmission and is able to withstand the most adverse weather conditions and sudden temperature changes.
· Rear roof: normally made of opaque layers that reflect light that has passed between the spaces of the cells, making the cells collide again with each other.
· Metal frame: usually made of aluminium, ensures rigidness and a tight seal to the set, has the necessary elements (generally drilling holes) to assemble the panel on the support structure.
· Terminal box: incorporates the boards to connect the module.
· Diode protection: prevents damages due to partial shadows on the surface of the module
